Friends of Vernon Park Statement on the YWCA Building
The Friends of Vernon Park are deeply troubled by the condition of the YWCA building on the park’s northern edge. For 8 years we have watched its disintegration with increasing concern. The building has never been adequately secured, and is a magnet for crime, trash and ugliness. We hope that it will not remain unsecured any longer, no matter what its future holds. Time is of the essence, especially in this extremely harsh winter with potential major ice damage.
The community deserves a full report from city structural engineers and a clear process for proposals for the future development of the building.
Friends of Vernon Park are willing to work with others to ensure a positive outcome for everyone in the neighborhood.

Message from the GUCDC:
Community Meeting on the YWCA Building
Thursday, January 22, 6:30pm, at First United Methodist Church of Germantown(FUMCOG), 6001 Germantown Avenue at High Street.
Germantown United CDC (“GU”) recently learned that the old YWCA building on Germantown Avenue, adjacent to Vernon Park, may be threatened with demolition.
Please join us and other community groups, including Germantown Community Connection, for a meeting at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown (“FUMCOG”) on January 22, 2015, 6:30pm, to hear about the threat to this significant historic centerpiece in Germantown’s “Town Center” and the proposal on the table that may save it. 2014 Annual Report
Dear Friends of Vernon Park.
We hope you enjoyed hearing the voices of children running around the playground, the monarch butterflies on the ironweed or the low winter sun through the trees. Maybe you bought a necklace at the Flea Market, watched a soccer game or took a walk in the park.
It always surprises me when I sit down to write the annual report just how much has gone on in our Emerald of Germantown since the previous year! Please, take a few minutes to read the attached annual report and take pride in all your group has achieved this year.
Please consider including Friends of Vernon Park in your year-end financial donations by contributing through Paypal on our website: http://friendsofvernonpark.org or send a check made payable to Friends of Vernon Park, P.O. Box 48374, Philadelphia, PA 19144 We welcome contributions large or small throughout the year.
We hope you’ll join us in 2015. As noted in the attached report, there will be several months when the park will be under construction and we’ll be unable to work in the park itself. Do come to our regular meetings, usually held on the second Monday of the month from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at the Center in the Park (entrance from the parking lot off Rittenhouse Street).
Please feel free to forward this report to anyone who might be interested.
Best wishes to you all,
Ruth Seeley
President, Friends of Vernon Park
