We’ll be planting trees, raking leaves, weeding garden beds, and more, in Historic Vernon Park. Volunteers will see and learn about the Vernon Park monuments, the rain garden, the Black Writers Museum, and more. We’ll lead a thorough orientation at the start of the event, provide hands-on leadership throughout the day, and wrap up with a reflection and appreciation activity at the end. No special skills are needed. This event will appeal most to folks who love Nature, gardening, or physical work outdoors. We’ll provide light refreshments. Volunteers should wear old clothes – we’ll be getting dirty! – and sturdy shoes, and bring any snacks or drinks that you like. We provide all tools and materials. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

Summer Reading and Arts program this Summer in Vernon Park, in partnership with the Joseph E. Coleman Northwest Philadelphia Regional Library and made possible by the Fairmount Park Conservancy. Children (of all ages) and their caregivers are invited to cool off ‘Under the Shady Old Tree’ this summer. Guest readers will read aloud, along with arts & activities based on a specific theme each week.

Friends of Vernon Park is seeking slightly used children’s books to distribute at these story times so that our young friends and neighbors can add to/start their own libraries. Attendees are welcome to bring a book to swap, but it is not required—we will have plenty to share.

If you have well loved children’s books in good condition that you would like to donate, please contact info@friendsofvernonpark.org.

In case of bad weather, we will meet at the library in the Children’s department.

Welcome back, sun! The #LOVEYOURPARK cleanup & planting event in Vernon Park has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 9 (yes, same day as the elected officials’ rescheduled Community Day!). We’ll be working in the park from 9am-12pm, come on out for any time you can join us!
